Caswell Informs Homeowners About Important Property Tax Form Regarding Home Maintenance, Repairs, & Replacements

Thursday, January 12, 2012

LANSING – Senator Bruce Caswell wants to inform homeowners about an often-overlooked form they can use to keep their property taxes from increasing when they do routine maintenance or replace certain items in their homes.  Homeowners may complete and file the form (STC 865) with their local assessor to exclude certain repairs, replacements, and maintenance from the calculations the assessor uses to calculate the true cash value of a home for property tax assessments.  The form covers items like:

  • repainting a house
  • repairing or replacing siding, a roof, porches, steps, sidewalks, and drives
  • adding or replacing gutters
  • insulating or weather-stripping
  • rewiring
  • replacing plumbing fixtures or light fixtures
  • replacing a furnace or water heater
  • repairing plaster and interior painting

To obtain form STC 865 you may download it from the State Tax Commission website: http://www.michigan.gov/documents/865f_2712_7.pdf, or request one from Senator Caswell’s office by calling (517) 373-5932 or emailing SenBCaswell@senate.mi.gov.
