Sen. Arlan Meekhof, R-West Olive, joined Gov. Rick Snyder as his legislation outlawing partial birth abortions was signed into law. Public Act 168 of 2011 (Senate Bill 160) outlaws the practice of partial birth abortion in Michigan, unless determined necessary to save the life of the mother. The law was modeled after the federal Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2003, which was upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court. (10/11/2011)

 

Senate Majority Floor Leader Arlan Meekhof, R-West Olive, presented Eagle Crest Charter Academy Principal Daniel Harris (left) with a special tribute honoring the school for achieving status as a School of Excellence. The CMU-authorized academy earned the distinction this summer as a result of consistently outstanding performance on the MEAP test. The school in located in Holland and offers grades K-8. Meekhof, along with dignitaries from CMU, congratulated everyone at the academy for a job well done at an all-school assembly on Sept. 9.  (9/9/2011)

 

Senate Majority Floor Leader Arlan Meekhof, R-West Olive, welcomed the Rev. Tyler Wagenmaker of Beaverdam Christian Reformed Church in Hudsonville to the state Capitol Wednesday. LANSINGSenate Majority Leader Randy Richardville, R-Monroe, (back, center) and (from his left) Sens. Mark Jansen, R-Gaines Twp.; Darwin Booher, R-Evart; Arlan Meekhof, R-West Olive Twp.; and Mike Kowall, R-White Lake, joined Gov. Rick Snyder as he signed into law an eight-bill package that brings greater fairness and simplicity to Michigans tax structure while aggressively positioning the state to be economically competitive. The simplified tax code improves Michigans tax burden rank from 30th to 16th in the nation. The reform eliminates the job-killing Michigan Business Tax and replaces it with a flat, 6 percent Corporate Income Tax. The tax will be levied on "C" corporations, which make up roughly one-third of businesses in Michigan, while all other businessesmore than 100,000will pay only individual income tax. State Sen. Arlan B. Meekhof, R-West Olive, is administered the oath of office by Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Robert P. Young, Jr. Standing with Meekhof is his wife Barb Meekhof, son Adrian Meekhof, granddaughter Addyson Beidler, parents Sid and Jan Meekhof, sister Mari Anne Vogelaar, niece Abbey Vogelaar, and cousins Marilyn Driesenga and Betty Velthouse. Michigan senators were sworn in on the first session day of the 96th Legislature.  (1/12/2011)
