Anderson Urges Immediate Assistance for Nation’s Automotive Industry

LANSING - Today State Senator Glenn S. Anderson introduced a resolution imploring the President and United States Congress to adopt an assistance package for the American automobile industry.

“The outlook for our nation’s economy is inextricably bound to the survival of our high-tech domestic automobile manufacturing capabilities,” said Anderson. “Temporary assistance at this critical juncture will protect millions of jobs here in Michigan and throughout the country.”

As the automotive industry has pursued advanced technologies to ensure its competitiveness in the new economy, it has been faced with daunting challenges. Drastic swings in energy prices, devastating drops in home values, and reduced consumer confidence have made the capital-intensive research and development process extremely difficult. Wisely investing federal dollars in this vital industry with solid agreements from automakers will help to bolster our country’s economic and national security.

“It is clear that the automotive industry has seen transformational changes since its inception,” Senator Anderson added. “America’s greatness has in large part been synonymous with the development and growth of our country’s domestic automakers. The industry has been the economic backbone and the cultural face of America. It is crucial that we all work cooperatively to prevent the unthinkable and reinvest in our future.”

Upon the resolution’s passage it shall be transmitted to the President of the United States, the President of the United States Senate, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, and the members of the Michigan congressional delegation. Before his career in public service, Senator Anderson worked for Ford Motor Company for more than thirty years.
